DMG Newsletter for Friday, January 3rd, 2020!
When we've had a past sad enough to last for sometime into the future These storms have torn and true love is alone and the past is almost a failure Consciences burn in the program turn, computing the social behaviour But yoke revolts, the foundation bolts and cries for yet another saviour And I'd pack my things on a pair of wings and tomorrow I'd be parting With the summer birds and the winter herds for a place to face a new heart in But it makes no difference, where I am I'm in the game first hand There are no certain answers and no time to understand The rules are set to paradox, coercion and blind faith The goal's a changing paradise, a moment out of date The dream is righteous grandeur fit to flood the universe The fact is more than meets the eye but less than runs the earth, running the earth And the prisoner of the present paces up and down inside his cell He's the living replacement, somersaulting from this psychic well Screaming: 'I'm the sponsor of a hell' Voices like the sea inside a shell Telling me I cannot stake a claim Possession is a clue but not the game So please leave this world as clean as when you came So please leave this world as clean as when you came Please leave this world as clean as when you came Please leave this world as clean as when you came Please leave this world as clean as when you came I first heard Roy Harper in the mid-seventies when I bought of few of his early records as import cut-outs.
He ended up becoming friends with various British bands like The Who, Pink Floyd who had a song named after him and Led Zep Jimmy Page plays on one or two of his albums.
Roy Harper is still alive currently retired and has had records out since 1966, pushing his long career past the half century mark.
Harper has more than thirty albums out and I own and savor every single one.
Check out the great lyrics and give it a listen on record not on a downloadit is still a classic.

Seen the cops out on the street Watched 'em throwin' rocks and stuff And chokin' in the heat Listened to reports About the whisky passin' 'round Seen the smoke and fire And the market burnin' down Watched while everybody On his street would take a turn To stomp and smash and bash and crash And slash and bust click at this page burn And I'm watchin' and I'm waitin' Hopin' for the best Even think I'll go to prayin' Every time I hear 'em sayin' That there's no way to delay That trouble comin' every day No way to delay That trouble comin' every day Well, you can cool it, You can heat it.
Take your TV tube and eat it 'N all that phony stuff on sports 'N all the unconfirmed reports You know I watched that rotten box Until my head begin to hurt From checkin' out the way The newsman say they get the dirt Before the guys on channel so-and-so And further they assert That more info show they'll interrupt To bring you news if it comes up They say that if the place blows up They will be the first to tell, Because the boys they got downtown Are workin' hard and doin' swell, And if anybody gets the news Before it hits the street, They say that no one blabs it faster Their coverage can't be beat And if another woman driver Gets machine-gunned from her seat They'll send some joker with a brownie And you'll see check this out all complete So I'm watchin' and I'm waitin' Hopin' for the best Even think I'll go to prayin' Every time I hear 'em sayin' That there's no way to delay That trouble comin' every day No way to delay That trouble comin' every day Hey, you know something people?
I'm not black But there's a whole lots a times I wish I could say I'm not white Well, I seen the fires burnin' And the local people turnin' On the merchants and the shops Who used to sell their brooms and mops And every other household item Watched the mob just turn and bite 'em And they say it served 'em right Because a few of them are white, And it's the same across the nation Black and white discrimination Yellin' "You can't understand me!
More than fifty years later, those words still ring true as we again governed by rascists, fascists and liars, meant to divide us.

Money makes money in this made-for-T.
They recorded some five albums between 1967 and 1972 which were released by the Enoch Light label, a label that specialized in audiophile muzak of some sort.
Or so I thought.
The CD I found was actually their reunion effort from 2001.
The more I listened to it, the more I dug link />There is something about the vocal harmonies and stripped down yet quaint arrangements that really touches me.
When I played this album for my sister during our Thanksgiving holiday, she said it sounds like cheesy Christmas music.
But when I play this disc for the two young men, who are astute listeners, Frank and John, who work with me, we marvel at the subtle, well constructed inventiveness.
We all love this disc and keep playing it over and over.
And oh, those hooks!
The words to the above song are also pretty interesting and well worth considering.
If you want to purchase a copy of the CD, we can get you a copy so let us know.
He went home and collapsed in his kitchen and passed away at around midnight.
Eric was a lawyer and specialized in divorce and bankruptcies, he often told sad stories about the folks he represented.
We bonded since we both loved a lot of the same music: Downtown, avant-jazz, progressive rock, punk, new wave, noise, the more obscure, the better.
Over the past decade, we attended festivals together like FIMAV in Victoriaville, Quebec and the Guelph Fest, both in Canada.
Another close friend of our was Mike Panico, who worked at Sony as an archivist, co-founded the Relative Pitch label and worked at DMG on weekends when we were located on california casinos roulette Bowery.
Mike and I became close friends, had breakfast together every weekend, attended many shows and volunteered at The Stone.
In 2012, when Hurricane Sandy blasted its way through our area, I lost power in my apartment in New Jersey for two full weeks.
So, I stay with them on their apt on 24th St.
I am not really a cat person, but I was relieved to be in a warm apt, which Continue reading stayed at for a week.
We would try out different restaurants and I always looked forward to these meals since we would talk about what was important to us: creative music, politics and the often ridiculous world we still live in.
These adventures are my favorite memories of the past decade.
The three of us even went to London to attend the Henry Cow Reunion, a Robert Wyatt Interview and John Stevens Celebration, as well as the Douk Festival in Amsterdam which featured members of the ICP Orchestra.
Thanks to Mike Panico for planning these special trips and to Eric for being part of our crew!
Over the past five years, Eric has been having serious health problems, diabetic losing toeskidney eventually being on dialysisvision and heart with several stents.
Last year, Mike Panico passed away suddenly on October of 2018 and Eric was the one who told me, were are still shocked and puzzled at his passing.
Eric ended his law practice a couple of years earlier, due to his health problems.
Around the time that Mike passed, Eric decided to do something to help the musicians whose music inspired us.
Eric reached out to dozens of creative musicians and offered this web page a comfortable place to play and guaranteed them a fair amount of money, no matter how many folks showed up.
Only a few of these shows broke even.
Chris has stood by him throughout his long, difficult ordeal.
A couple of months ago, I organized something known as the Independent Promoters Alliance which is basically just a half dozen friends who pool our efforts in order to promote the music we care about, the music that inspires us and helps us to stay sane in a difficult world.
Two of those concerts, presented by the Independent Promoters Alliance will take place this weekend, see below.
These are dedicated to Eric Stern.
This week, I have been listening to many blues records and crying to myself, wondering why someone who had such a positive effect on many lives died so young at 54.
Tonight, I raise a toast to Eric Stern, one of my best friends and someone whom I am proud to have known.
We love you Eric, you will not be forgotten.
We and our other friends at The Independent Promoters Alliance are presenting two special concerts this weekend.

Or is it more than that?
I still weep whenever I listen to it, it still touches me that deeply inside.
Hearing Soft Machine in 1968 Vol.
Wyatt was nudged out of the Softs in 1971, telling him he could no longer sing with this serious avant-jazz combo.
So he started another band called Matching Mole French for Soft Machinewho made two great studio records.
Tragedy struck in 1973 when Mr.
Wyatt fell out of a third floor window at a LP release party for Lady June.
He landed on his back, which broke from the fall and he has been in a wheelchair ever since.
All are well worth hearing, Mr.
Wyatt is now retired from his music career.
Also, he also embraced the whimsical side of the Canterbury spirit, which is affectionately referred to as pataphysics.
As we all look at the ridiculousness of life around us, we need to laugh instead of crying at the absurdity of things.

Sometimes I get tired of being too sarcastic or pessimistic or just being an old sourpuss, so I do something make to myself feel better and those around me as well.
I find that certain dance music, hummable melodies and even sunshine pop, helps me to through the more difficult times in life.

This always makes me smile, but is rarely true.
I have just heard a new songwriter from Chicago named John Prine.
I this web page thinking that Mr.
Kristofferson was right when I bought that album sometime that year.
I have been listening to that record recently and marveling at the songs, especially the lyrics.
Every time I play it, I still crack up, laughing.
Prine sings about is from getting stoned on some herb, something that was pretty much commonplace for many of us freaks and normal folks as well during that period.
Prine went on the make many more records through the years, many of which I still enjoy.
But, it is that first that still makes me smile whenever I listen to it.

The kingdom is crumbling.
The king is in the counting house, Laughing and stumbling.
His armies are extended, Way beyond the shore.
As he sends our lovely boys to die In a foreign jungle war.
The queen is in the garden, Moaning and weeping.
She spied the execution of Spades.
While he lay sleeping.
The Kingdom judge and jester leaped together from the tower.
Lie still as fallen statues.
In the cultivated bower, bower.
And call out the border guard.
The kingdom is crumbling.
The king is in the counting house, Laughing and stumbling.
His armies are extended, Way beyond the shore.
As he sends our lovely boys to die In a foreign jungle war.
The orchestra assembles, and tries in vain to tune.
While outside in the stableyard, the hounds are howling at the moon.
A blind man in the far off jungle, his bamble hurt in flames.
Sits and whispers to his flute.
And call out the border guard.
The kingdom is crumbling.
The king is in the counting house, Laughing and stumbling.
His armies are extended, Way beyond the shore.
As he sends our lovely boys to die In a foreign jungle war.
The scarlet cloaked and white horsed huntsman Rides upon the meadow green.
His silver arrow scars the sky, and I can hear the eagle scream.
The peasants watch in dumb struck wonder!
The gay procession passed them by.
The victory silence is consuming me!
And we've killed at last the eagle's cry!
And call out the border guard.
The kingdom is crumbling.
The king is in the pouting house, Laughing and stumbling.
His armies are extended, Way beyond the shore.
As he sends read more lovely boys to die, As we send our lovely boys to die, As you send our lovely boys to die In a foreign jungle war.
Why people, I can't stand it any more!
I, I, I can't stand it any more!
Where is that place!
Bye, bye, bye, bye!
Die, die, die, die!
Bye, bye, bye, bye!

Rowan sang lead with Bill Monroe along with David Grisman.
After Earth Opera broke up in 1969, Mr.
Rowan joined Seatrain, which was an offshoot of the Blues Project.
Check out their superb self-titled album on Capitol.
Rowan soon got together with his two younger brothers and formed the Rowan Brothers.
Rowan went on to record more than a dozen solo albums which blended his bluegrass, folk, ethnic and rock influences.
I caught him several times at a bluegrass fest in upstate New York.
The above song was an FM radio hit and I remember hearing it several times and thinking that the lyrics and intensely song vocals sounded most appropriate due to the turbulent times of 1968: inner city unrest, civil rights protests and the unwanted escalation of the war in Viet Nam.
I still listen to the CD with both albums on it at the store and it still touches me.

I must admit that I dug all of the Monkees hits as well as a few of their album cuts.
The title of the song comes from Pleasant Valley Way, a long street that runs through West Orange, NJ where Goffin and King were living at the time.
There was a roller skating rink on Pleasant Valley Way, that featured rock concerts during the summers of 1968 and 1969.

No man alive will come to you With another tale to tell, But you know that we shall meet again If your mem'ry serves you well.
This wheel's on fire, Rolling down the road, Best notify my next of kin, This wheel shall explode!
If your mem'ry serves you well, I was goin' to confiscate your lace, And wrap it up in a sailor's knot And hide it in your case.
If I knew for sure that it was yours.
But it was oh so hard to tell.
But you knew that we would meet again, If your mem'ry serves you well.
This wheel's on fire, Rolling down the road, Best notify my next of kin, This wheel shall explode!
If your mem'ry serves you well, You'll remember you're the one That called on me to call on them To get you your favors done.
And after ev'ry plan had failed And there was nothing more to tell, You knew that we would meet again, If your mem'ry served you well.

There are so many questions posed roulette roadshow Why are we waiting again?
What are we unpacking?
Which lace are you trying to confiscate?
Is it mine or not?
Which favors are you or we trying to get done?
Why is that wheel on fire?

I stopped buying singles around 1970 when I was acquiring a large collection of albums.
This is how I discovered Pere Ubu, Thomas Dolby, Elvis Costello, Televison and loads of more obscure bands.
In the eighties, I wrote for Jersey Beat Zine for nearly a decade and again discovered even more bands, hard core, psych, roots rock, noise, etc.
This brings back a good deal of good memories and I try to manna c la roulette to 1 or 2 singles every couple of nights.
Listening to that song now, it still sounds fresh, inspired, catchy, not just the words but the groove and perhaps the melodic hook.
For me, there is nothing better than dancing to and singing along with a song that you love.
You just get lost in the moment and forget the rest of the other BS that brings us down.
Stop reading the bad news and put on those groovy dancing shoes and get down!

Sadly, they left, telling no one goodbye.
Pressed rat wore red jodhpurs, warthog a striped tie.

The bad captain madman had ordered their fate.
He laughed and stomped off with a nautical gate.

I had heard it only once in its entirety before hand, but heard a few songs on FM radio.
It turned out that Mr.
The Graham Bond band were influential in the UK but not very well known here.
Cream were something else and I knew they were unique from the very beginning in 1966.
Considering that both Mr.
Each of the five albums by Cream from 1966-1968 are essential to those who love sixties rock.
Another click to see more thing about Cream is that most of their lyrics were written British jazz poets: Pete Brown for Jack Bruce and Mike Taylor for Ginger Baker.
Ginger Baker does the spoken words, doing a marvelous job.
When Cream split up, Clapton and Baker started Blind Faith with Stevie Winwood and Rick Grech, another great band that lasted just a year.
The concert was staged in the round, so the stage was in the middle of the audience and went around in slow circles.
Not a good idea.
The stage was surrounded by a circle of cops to protect the band.
A man in the front row reached up and grabbed it from the edge manna c la roulette the stage.
One the cops grabbed it out of his hand and knocked the man back into his seat.
Ginger Baker got up from the drums, walked right up to that cop and punched him out, knocking him down.
The crowd roared in approval and manna c la roulette concert ended, the band escorted from the stage.
The audience kept chanting for let them back and after 15 minutes, Blind Faith came back and did an encore.
It was the first and only tour.
I have been a fan of Ginger Baker ever since his days in Graham Bond and Cream.
He was an incredible drummer and a difficult person to deal with as well.
I collect and dig everything he has appeared on.
And yes, he could be harsh to deal with, check out that documentary about him released a few years back.
I caught the Cream reunion at MSG a while back and they still sounded great more than 40 years later!
A special toast to one of the greatest drummers of them all - Ginger Baker!

It is one of my favorite songs ever and it captures something special.
The 90 minute cassette contained perhaps 30 roots rock songs that made me feel good due to the positive energy the generated.
The music, the words, the feeling they got across.
John, Little Feat, Roy Harper鈥?That tape and the car Subaru hatchback that I played it in are long gone, but I still remember most of the songs in the sequence on that tape.
I have been thinking about the way a song or album can transport us somewhere else, inspire us, make us smile, laugh, get angry or even cry.
Sometimes the harsh reality of the daily grind is just too much so when I go home I play at least one album which will make me feel like a human being who is part of a larger family.
I have been going out of my way to talk to my neighbors, strangers on the train or subway or streets, just to be friends.
We need to reach go here and realize that we are all connected and not alone.
It will both of us feel better to be alive.

The Passing of Another Downtown Giant: STEVE DALACHINSKY - 1946 - 2019 Early on Monday morning of this week, I sat in front of my computer screen at home and was overwhelmed with emotion.
My good friend and Downtown concert promoter, ERIC STERN, has been in the hospital for the past week with heart problems and no one was sure if he would make it through.
On Saturday, Eric checked himself out of the hospital in order to attend a memorial for Mike Panico, another close friend who had passed away nearly a year ago.
The concert was glorious for all in attendance, helping each of us to heal from the loss of our good friend.
Earlier that evening, Downtown Poet Laureate, STEVE DALACHINSKY, attended a Sun Ra Arkestra concert further downtown.
Steve and his wife, Yuko Otomo, rushed out after the early evening gig to go out to Long Island where Steve was giving a poetry reading.
Steve did give the reading and afterwards collapsed, having a massive stroke.
He was taken to the hospital and put in intensive care where is stayed throughout the next day.
He passed away early Monday morning around 5am.
Everyone who knew him from around the world is still shocked.
I had just hung out with him earlier that week at The Stone and he looked a bit tired but fine.
He was 72 at the time of his passing.
I met STEVE DALACHINSKY and his wife Yuko Otomo at the Old Knitting Factory in the mid-eighties.
The Old Knit, on Houston, was the focal point of the ever-evolving Downtown Scene.
There was around a dozen folks who attended shows there several times a week sometimes every night!
I remember when saxist Charles Gayle arrived and played at the Knit every Monday for more than a year.
The five of us were there every week, it was like a religious experience for us, a sort of Baptism by Fire Music and it brought us all closer together.
When he began to get published and started doing poetry readings, I was impressed by his words.
He worked hard to try to capture the essence of this music and did an extraordinary job.
By attending so many gigs and sharing his excitement and enthusiasm, he nurtured the Downtown Scene, for the musicians and listeners both.
He introduced Lars from the Silkheart label to Charles Gayle and othershence Mr.
Gayle soon had several discs out on that label.
The KnitWorks label and later Rogue Art also took his advice, releasing discs from artists he recommended.
Something I always looked forward to.
As a spoken word artist, Mr.
Dalachinsky also evolved, working with many musicians who he admired: Matt Shipp, Joelle Leandre, Loren Connors, Federico Ughi, Dave Liebman, Talibam!
There will be a memorial for Steve Dalachinsky in a few months so stay tuned.
I urge you to search out and read or listen to the poetry of Mr.
Dalachinsky - a true New York original!

Palitz and took a bus to NYC and another bus to Atlantic City.
It was a long schlep, but we were determined to attend.
The Atlantic City Pop Festival was three days long with 10 bands per day and it took place at the Atlantic City race track.
Unlike Woodstock, which took place 2 weeks later, this fest was well run, with few snafus.
The stage was smartly designed by Buckminster Fuller and was set up in the center of the field.
The front stage was a half circle, with the following band set up behind them on another half circle.
As soon as one set ended, the round stage was turned so that the next band was ready to play in just a few minutes.
Brilliant, and it worked smoothly!
For me and many of the 100,000 folks who attended, it was a life-changing experience!
I saw and heard how music could bring folks together, inspire and nurture them, all united, not divided.
I heard that there were some cancelations and additions so the list above is as far as I remember it.

Slowly it wanders,--pauses,--creeps,-- Anon it sparkles,--flashes and leaps; And ever as onward it gleaming goes A light on the Bong-tree stems it throws.
And those who watch at that midnight hour From Hall or Terrace, or lofty Tower, Cry, as the wild light passes along,-- 'The Dong!
And all the woods and the valleys rang With the Chorus they daily and nightly sang,-- 'Far and few, far and few, Are the lands where the Jumblies live; Their heads are green, and their hands are blue And they went to sea in a sieve.
While the cheerful Jumblies staid; They danced in circlets all night long, To the plaintive pipe of the lively Dong, In moonlight, shine, or shade.
For day and night he was always there By the side of the Jumbly Girl so fair, With her sky-blue hands, and her sea-green hair.
Till the morning came of that hateful day When the Jumblies sailed in their sieve away, And the Dong was left on the cruel shore Gazing--gazing for evermore,-- Ever keeping his weary eyes on That pea-green sail on the far horizon,-- Singing the Jumbly Chorus still As he sate all day on the grassy hill,-- 'Far and few, far and few, Are the lands where the Jumblies live; Their heads are green, and their hands are blue And they went to sea in a sieve.
And he wove him a wondrous Nose,-- A Nose as strange as a Nose could be!
Of vast proportions and painted red, And tied with cords to the back of his head.
And now each night, and all night long, Over those plains still roams the Dong; And above the wall of the Chimp and Snipe You may hear the sqeak of his plaintive pipe While ever he seeks, but seeks in vain To meet with his Jumbly Girl again; Lonely and wild--all night he goes,-- The Dong with a luminous Nose!
And all who watch at the midnight hour, From Hall or Terrace, or lofty Tower, Cry, as they trace the Meteor bright, Moving along through the dreary night,-- 'This is the hour when forth he goes, 'The Dong with a luminous Nose!

But you and I, we've been through that And this is not our fate So let us not talk falsely now The hour's getting late.
I was in the dream which was set in a western, open field scene, underneath some trees and holding hands with my favorite cowgirl, Jen N.
We saw some men on horses riding in the distance and I could hear this song playing in the background.
The song seem to tell a story which was being played out before us.
It was a perfect day, the light breeze blowing and when the song ended, we hugged to capture a special shared feeling.

Close your eyes and listen very closely to the sound of my voice.
Imagine that there is nothing but you and the sound.
Floating freely high above the Earth.
Now, as you listen you will begin to relax.
Every sound you hear relaxes you further.
Just you and the sound.
Your arms and legs feel heavy.
Every sound takes you deeper and deeper.
Nothing can disturb you.
Every muscle, every part of your body is relaxing further and further as you drift down deeper and deeper.
You are floating away from the sound of my voice but you can still hear it.
Imagine you are riding down an escalator.
Slowly going down farther and farther into deep relaxation.
Now, I'm going to count backwards from five to zero and on every number you will go another level deeper.
Relaxing more completely on every count until I reach zero.
On zero you go twice as deep.
Backwards from five to zero.
Deeper on every count and on zero, twice as deep.

Friends, the past year has been difficult in so many ways!
I am not going to list all of the things that we continue to complain about, so鈥?Let us remember all of the good things that have made 2018 memorable in positive ways!
The closing of The Old Stone after 13 years with a weeks worth of transcendent all-star Downtown improvisers during the last week of February.
The New Stone opened full-time 5 nights a week on March 1st and has been a great place to hear challenging music for 5 nights a week!
The Victo and the Vision Festivals were both awesome!
The DMG Anniversary set with KALABALICK at The New School was womderful!
Way too many great sets at Roulette, I-Beam, Cornelia Street Cafe, Jazz Gallery, Le Pousson Rouge, Arts for Art, Greenwich House鈥?The MIKE PANICO Memorial Concert at Roulette earlier this month was a very special occasion for all who attended.
The ongoing weekly free music in-store concerts at DMG have been better attended and still provides a source of inspiration to those who need it.

I am currently working on my year end best of lists which I hope to transmit sometime in January.
I will again ask a dozen journalists, musicians and serious listeners for their own lists.
After some forty years, the legendary Cornelia Street Cafe will close its doors on January 4th of 2019, next week.
Our late friend, Peter Cox, was there so often that whenever I go there, I think of him.
This amazing trio has performed at Cornelia Street every year during the last week of December for as long as I can remember.
A number of my friends will be attending this night and we will drink a toast to the CORNELIA STREET CAFE!
Be there or be square!
